The Power of Cinema: 7 Things We Lose Without the Movie Theatre Experience

Going to the movie theater is more than just watching a movie on a big screen. It’s an experience that brings people together and creates memories that last a lifetime. However, with the rise of streaming services and the pandemic forcing the closure of many theaters, the future of the movie theater experience is uncertain. If there is no longer a movie theater going experience, here are some things we will miss out on:

  1. The Communal Experience: Going to the movies is a social activity that brings people together. It’s a chance to share a story with others, to laugh, cry, and be scared together. You can feel the energy in the room and it’s contagious. An experience that can’t be replicated at home alone on the couch.

  2. The Big Screen: There’s something special about seeing a movie on a giant screen. It’s an immersive experience that transports you to another world. Watching a movie on a small screen at home just doesn’t have the same impact. Up until recent times most movies were created with viewing on the big screen in mind.

  3. The Sound : The movie theater experience is also about the sound. The rumble of the bass, the crispness of the dialogue, and the surround sound all work together to create an experience that can’t be matched at home.

  4. Escape: Going to the movies is a chance to escape from reality for a few hours. It’s a chance to forget about the world outside and immerse yourself in a different world. We can’t pause it. We are forced to go through the emotional experience as the filmmaker intended. We can’t diffuse the feelings by walking away.

  5. Opening Night: There’s something special about being one of the first people to see a new movie. The excitement of opening night, the anticipation of waiting in line, and the buzz of the crowd all add to the experience.

  6. Popcorn: Let’s be honest, going to the movies is also about the snacks. Whether it’s a bucket of popcorn, a box of candy, a giant soda, or a glass of wine, as I like to have, the snacks are part of the experience.

  7. Nostalgia: The movie theater experience is also about nostalgia. It’s about remembering the first movie you saw with your friends or family, or the first date you went on. It’s about reliving those memories and creating new ones.

If the movie theater experience were to disappear, I will miss it. It was the way that movies were intended to be seen for over 100 years . Hopefully we will support our local theaters and keep this movie experience alive for future generations to enjoy.

I wonder what you will miss?
